.Mac comes in handy

Posted on January 25th, 2007 in Digital by Rebel Fish

.macSo, Rebel Fish was sitting around, chatting with a friend in iChat (for non-Mac folk, that’s an IM client). She wanted to add said friend to her address book, and automatically did so from iChat. Then she saw that he was already in her address book, just without the screen name.. So, while chatting and with both contacts open, she swapped the screen name, deleted the new address book entry, and tried to go back to chatting.

Her system didn’t like it. Address book froze. iChat froze. So, she force quit those applications and relaunched them. No problem, kept chatting away. She then realized her buddy list was missing all of her custom names for her buddies. Just their screen name were showing. She opened up her Address book to find that all of her contacts (nearly 1000) had been nuked in the force-quit.

Normally, people would panic. Rebel Fish just laughed, kept chatting, and went to her .Mac control panel. She selected the advanced tab, selected her computer, and clicked on ‘Reset Sync Data.’ Then she told it to only reset the address book contents.

Then she went back to chatting and after a few minutes, noticed all of her custom names for her buddies showed up again. She checked her address book again, and all 1000 contacts were back. The person she was chatting to never knew that she’d lost all of her contact data and had to pull it all from the internet to replace it.

Gotta love Mac!

Off-Camera Flash System

Posted on January 23rd, 2007 in Photography by Rebel Fish

Rebel Fish uses a very simple and portable off-camera lighting system to shoot her weddings. She used to haul around big Photogenic monolights and stands and umbrellas and cords and extensions in a big rolling case. Now, she takes a bag that’s about 20″ long and about 5 inches in diameter!

Most of what she needed to find out was at strobist.com He has a lighting 101 thing that goes over the equipment and a ton of great information on how to shoot with the small strobes.

Here’s what Rebel Fish shoots with… She buys as much as her gear as she can from Midwest Photo Exchange, cause they’re cool people!

Flash:
Since she uses Canon, she loves the Speedlight 580. She owns 2, and they do rock. If you use Nikon, or some other system, make sure your flashes are capable of shooting in manual (necessary to adjust light level) and slave modes (if you want to fire more than one).

Wireless Remotes:
To fire the flashes off camera, you’ll need the ever popular and amazing Pocketwizards. You can use an infrared transmitter, too, but then you are limited to line of site and you don’t have as much flexibility of where you place the lights. An advantage of using an infrared system is that you can use ETTL to automatically adjust your flash settings. Canon’s can also fire a focusing grid to help with auto-focus in low-light situations. Rebel Fish uses and prefers the Pocket Wizard radio transmitters.

Adapter:
You need this to attach the flash and umbrella to the light stand with this adapter.

Umbrellas:
You’ll want the umbrellas you can shoot through and maybe a black one. They’re pretty cheap. Get the ones that collapse to 15.”

Light Stands
The light stands that rock are VERY hard to find–always out of stock. The Bogen 3373: You can get put on the notify list here, but be sure to jump on it when you get the email. They will go back out of stock in minutes. These things collapse down to only 19″ but expand to nearly 6′!

Sync Cord
This adaptor that will work with the 580. If you have another flash, Paramount Cords seems to have most connectors to fit the Pocket Wizards.

Happy shooting!

Fun With Remotes

Posted on January 17th, 2007 in Digital, Fun by Rebel Fish

Ever wondered if your MacBook Pro or iMac remote works on other people’s computers? Sure it does. Ever wondered how much fun you could have at a tradeshow? Sure you have…

So did David Jay, Kevin Swan, and Nathan Holritz, which is what inspired them to have a little fun at the recent PPA convention, in San Antonio… Enjoy.

Now, for those of you Mac-heads who want to protect yourself from such audacious behavior (you know Rebel Fish wouldn’t leave you hangin’) Take your remote, point it at your computer, and hold Menu + Next for 5 seconds. You will see an icon of two chain links to indicate the paring was successful. Then you’ll be protected from future abuse.

Lightroom Quick Apply

Posted on January 11th, 2007 in Digital by Rebel Fish

When you’re in Library mode in Lightroom, instead of using “copy settings” from one image and pasting those settings on another image, Rebel Fish has a quicker solution (of course)!

Simply click on the image you want to copy the settings from, then click on the image you want to copy the settings to and click “paste previous” in the Quick Develop pane. Done!
