Kevin is an idiot. Canons have CMOS, Nikons have CCDs. Don’t listen to a word he says!

Great post. I agree with Kevin that Canon’s sensor cleaning service takes too long to be practical. My local pro camera repair shop charges too much. Finding a good D.I.Y. cleaning system is your best bet. I’ve successfully used the system from VisibleDust and get great results. Getting past the fear of cleaning your sensor yourself is half the battle. Now all of the shooters in Indy will be dropping by Kevin’s place for a sensor cleaning party!

May I suggest a few things? Ok, first don’t let the cat near your camera while you’re cleaning it. Second, the PecPads you need to open at one end, not in the middle and NEVER touch the center of the pad where it’s going to be anywhere near the CCD.
I personally run the cold water in the shower in my bathroom to get rid of any dust particles in the air, strip nekked before cleaning the sensors of my cameras.
As a result of what I call the “nekky camera rain dance” I only have to clean the sensors once to get them perfectly spiffy clean.
The one time I cleaned the sensors over the dog kennels, I did have to do them repeatedly to get rid of the residual fur.

I agree with Sam, the dry VisibleDust system rocks! Highly recommended! Awesome video and funny too. Rebel Fish should be nice and not call Kevin an Idiot!

Thanks for sharing this. I am still working up the nerve to go in after dust when it pops up.

I use a tool similar to visible dust but from Copper Mountain. I used to clean the sensor covers with the tools Kevin shows, but the brush works much better. I was totally skeptical at first, but the images don’t lie.

I’ve given up on swabs. I’ve found it’s better to take a man-made artists paint brush.. and a can of air. Run the air through the brush for 30 seconds, it creates a charge.. and sucks all the dust to the brush. Repeat as needed. Much easier than using the fluid.
